Out of This World: A First-Time Conference Experience
Article adapted from Wes Montey, Division D Director, with reflections from first-time attendee Michael N.
The District 99 2025 Conference, held May 30 to June 1 in Edmonton, was nothing short of fantastic!
We kicked things off Friday night with a brand-new tradition: the District’s first-ever Stand-Up Comedy Open Mic Night. Hosted by Marc Haine, members stretched their comedy muscles and lit up the room with smiles, laughter, and contagious energy—a perfect start to the weekend.
Saturday morning began with keynote speaker Dr. Marvin Washington’s Harnessing Diversity: Inclusive Leadership in Action. His thought-provoking address challenged us to reflect on how we lead and the impact we have on others. Sessions throughout the day gave members fresh tools and insights, including Using Improv to Drive Table Topics with Gloria Bosma and Collin Greene, and AI+U: Shaping an Ethical Future Together with Katrina Ingram.
Of course, no conference would be complete without contests! The International Speech Contest and Evaluation Contest showcased powerful, polished speeches. Congratulations to our winners, Okpapi Omoaka and Johnathan Hallett, and to every contestant whose courage and excellence inspired the audience.
The evening’s District Director’s Banquet and Awards brought recognition to the forefront, celebrating Distinguished Toastmasters, Triple Crown achievers, and “Of the Year” award recipients. Between the laughter, dancing, and camaraderie in the hospitality suite, it was a night to remember.
Sunday morning featured From Toastmaster to Paid Speaker with Marc Haine, who shared practical strategies for marketing your message. We also celebrated the installation of incoming District leaders, and honoured Puneeta McBryan, CEO of the Edmonton Downtown Business Association, with the Communication and Leadership Award. Closing keynote speaker Linh Huynh left us inspired with Wonderlust: Roadmap for Thriving in Uncertain Times—a fitting conclusion to a weekend of learning, laughter, and connection.
A First-Timer’s Perspective
For Michael N., attending his very first District conference was unforgettable:
“I attended the 2025 District 99 conference and had a great time. The energy is contagious, and as a first-timer, you feel an immediate sense of belonging as friendly Toastmasters introduce themselves and share their stories. Watching the contestants deliver polished, heartfelt speeches motivated me to continue improving my own communication skills and maybe one day compete in a speech contest. I look forward to attending next year’s conference.”
Looking Ahead
This year’s conference was a standout for connection, learning, and inspiration—leaving attendees energized and eager for what’s next. Thank you to Conference Chair Joan Petruk, the organizing team, and our many volunteers for creating an experience that will be remembered for years to come.
We can’t wait to see you at the 2026 District 99 Conference!
