At this time of year, haunted houses pop up on every corner. Ghost stories, skeletons, and spooky soundtracks fill the air—but for many people, none of it compares to the chill of public speaking.
The fear of speaking in front of others ranks among the world’s most common phobias. Even seasoned professionals admit their hearts race before stepping up to the mic. So what do we do with that fear? At Toastmasters, we transform it.
As shared in the October 2025 Toastmaster Magazine, a global member survey revealed that 3 out of 4 Toastmasters experienced a decrease in their fear of speaking after joining. That’s a powerful statistic—and one I see proven every week. I’ve watched shy guests walk into a meeting with shaking hands and walk out standing taller.
Fear fades through repetition. Through encouragement. Through structure. And yes, through fun.
That’s what makes clubs like ours so special: we practise in a supportive environment, guided by feedback, camaraderie, and growth. When we welcome new guests, we do so without pressure. No one’s asked to perform, only to observe, listen, and begin imagining what’s possible.
As International President Aletta Rochat shared in her article, “Connecting Through Humour,” we learn best in moments of enjoyment. So during this spooky season, lean into lightness. Let your next Table Topics round explore ghost stories or zombie apocalypse plans. Help your members laugh their way into greater confidence.
You never know who might be watching—or listening—and thinking, Maybe I could do that too.
