Being an Area Director — one of the most rewarding district leadership positions!

Appointed by the PDG/PDD Committee, the D99 Leader Development Working Group set out on its mission to describe the incredible learning experience and benefits of serving as an Area Director. We want you, the Area Director, to get the most out of your leadership experience. This handbook is filled with information and resources to help you be successful in your role.

We also know you can’t do all of this alone. Although this handbook primarily focuses on you, it also highlights the responsibilities of other district officers to help you be successful.

What is the purpose of this handbook?

This handbook describes a process starting with building your awareness about the Area Director role that ultimately culminates in accepting and completing your term as Area Director.

The handbook is designed to fulfill four objectives:

  1. Encourage qualified Toastmasters to seek and effectively carry out the Area
    Director position.
  2. Help you, as an Area Director, become the best you can be through a 7-step
    leadership model.
  3. Help District and Club officers understand the important role they have in your
    success as an Area Director.
  4. Contribute to the building of a strong and effective leadership culture in District
99 for the benefit of all members.

“As area director, you serve a vital role in Toastmasters. Of all district leaders, you
are the closest to clubs and members and are a direct link between them and the
division and district.”
