District 99 Awards

District 99 has a number of awards which are given each year. The following awards are given each year:

  • Toastmaster of the Year
  • Rookie of the Year
  • Public Relations Program of the Year
  • President of the Year
  • Area Director of the Year
  • Division Director of the Year
  • Communication and Leadership Award

The criteria and process are outlined for each award below.

General Eligibility

  • Nominees for any award shall be members in good standing of clubs in good
    standing in District 99 as of June 30 of the Toastmaster year.
  • The award recipient at any level (club, Area, Division or District) shall be that level’s
    nominee for the same award at a subsequent and higher level, subject only to that
    nominee being disqualified for any cause, in which case the second place recipient at
    the lower level will become the nominee for that award.
  • No nominee shall be disqualified solely by virtue of having won the same or any
    other awards at any other time or place, other than specifically provided for in the
    rules for that award.
  • Each recipient shall be selected in accordance with the prescribed rules and selection
    criteria for that award and, where applicable, from supporting documentation of the
    nominee determined at the previous level.
  • For the Toastmaster of the Year and Rookie of the Year, dual members may only
    apply activities within a club and, in the case of speech contests, representing a club
    as a speech contestant at an Area, Division or District Speech contest, to the award
    nomination for that club. Activities outside of the club, except as a speech
    contestant, may be applied to any nomination for any club that they are a member.

General Processes

  • All award nomination forms are available here on the District 99 web site. Links are provided below.
  • No ties are allowed at any level. Only one (1) candidate can advance.

Area / Division Level Process

  • For the annual awards for Toastmaster, Rookie, Public Relations Award,
    Area Director, and Division Director the ‘competition’ shall be based on the
    activities and, as the case may be, awards received commencing from July 1
    and ending June 30 of each Toastmaster year.
  • At each level above club level, the appropriate Director we recommend that the Director establish a
    selection committee of three members in good standing, chaired by the
    Director, except as provided as follows:

    • The Director must appoint an independent chair for the committee if
      the Director is a member of a club or a spouse of a nominee; and,
    • No member of the committee shall be a member of a club or is a
      spouse of a nominee. If the Director is a member of a club or is a
      spouse of a nominee for that level and award the Director shall have
      no input in the discussion by the committee.
  • The committee members shall sign each nomination form and forward the
    form to the Director at the next level.
  • The appropriate Director or Chairman of the selection committee shall submit
    a supporting letter to the Director at the next level for each nominee. The
    letter shall be no more than one page.

District Level Process

  • The selection committee at district level shall be comprised of the District Director, the Program Quality Director, the Club Growth Director and the
    Immediate Past District Director.

    • No fewer than three people shall form this committee.
    • The District Public Relations Manager may be asked to assist with selecting
      the Public Relations Program of the Year.
    • At the District level past District Directors or Governors may be added to
      ensure that not less than three people form the committee.
    • At other levels past District Officers at or above the level of selection may be
      added to ensure that not less than three people form the committee.

Presentation of Awards

The presenting officer shall first introduce all the nominees in the sequence of the Club/Area/Division, as applicable, they represent, and acknowledge the
achievement of each of the nominees.

  • The presenting officer shall provide a brief description of the recipients activities to achieve the award; announce the recipient; and, present the
    appropriate award.

Toastmaster of the Year

To recognise and honour that Toastmaster in District 99 who achieves and maintains the highest standard of excellence as a member of Toastmasters International. The recipient will be that Toastmaster in District 99 who most exemplifies the ideal Toastmaster.

Eligibility:

Any member in good standing of a club in good standing is eligible for District 99 Toastmaster of the Year, with the exception of Toastmasters who are Area Director, Division Director, Immediate Past District Director, District Finance Manager, District Administration Manager, Public Relations Manager, Club Growth Director, Program Quality Director and District Director for the award year in question.

Selection:

Selection shall be based on the overall effectiveness of the member as determined by rating the member using the Toastmaster of the Year form published on the District 99 website. The Toastmaster of the Year form may be amended from time to time.

Process:

Each club may select from its membership a recipient and forward that nominee to their Area Director no later than June 30th of the year for which the award is being given. The club is responsible for advising the Area Director of their selection for the Toastmaster of the Year award.

Rookie of the Year

Purpose:

To recognise and honour a new Toastmaster in District 99 who demonstrates a strong commitment to the Toastmasters standards of excellence. This Toastmaster will have shown improved performance in communication skills and will have contributed in other ways to the Toastmaster organisation.

Eligibility:

Any member in good standing of District 99 who joins a Toastmasters club at any time during the 18 months prior to June 15 of the year for which the award is being given is eligible.

  • The award will be based on activities of the member from the date of the member
    joining to the following June 15 of the award year.
  • The Toastmaster may only be nominated once by a Toastmaster club.
  • Eligible Toastmasters shall be new members of Toastmasters International and
    shall not be a reinstated member.
  • Toastmasters eligible for the Rookie of the Year award are also eligible for
    Toastmaster of the Year award.

Selection:

Selection will be based on the criteria set out in the Rookie of the Year form, as published on the District 99 website.

Process:

Clubs should select their candidate and forward their selection to their Area Director no later than June 30th of the year for which the member has been nominated.
